The Philippines copped two gold and two silver medals in the standard event of the 2015 FIDE (International Chess Federation) World Schools Championships held at the Dusit Thani Hotel in Pattaya, Thailand.
Woman FIDE Master (FM) Shania Mae Mendoza ruled the girls’ 17-under after scoring eight points on seven wins and two draws.
Mendoza defeated HR Manasa of India, Khayala Naghiyeva of Azerbaijan, Jiang Zhaoyi of China, Stanciu Ioana-Georgiana of Romania, Jemal Pvezdurdiyeva of Turkmenistan, Ayyyna Egorova of Russia and Koo Wei Xin Rosamund of Malaysia then split the point with Saloni Sapale of India and Mengli Ovezova of Turkmenistan.

Second seed John Merill Jacutina collected 6.5 points to deliver the second gold in the boys’ 15-under category. He outclassed Benjamin Yao Teng Oh of Hong Kong, Gms Thilakarathne of Sri Lanka, Wong Yee Chit of Singapore, and Indians Nadar Anand and Rahul Shukla.
Jacutina drew with DMGS Dassanayake of Sri Lanka, and Russians Saidov Bilukhadzh and Nikita Vionikonis.
International Master Paulo Bersamina and Kylen Joy Mordido, on the other hand, settled for silver in their age groups. Bersamina scored seven points in the boys’ 17-under while Mordido also had seven points in the girls’ 13-under.
The Philippines finished third overall as it claimed three golds, six silvers and one bronze counting the team’s one-gold, four-silver, one-bronze haul in the blitz event.
China topped the medal board with five golds, five silvers and four bronzes followed by Azerbaijan with four golds.
