Vengeful Perlas Pilipinas rips Indonesia to move within a win of Seaba title
6:25 PM
basketball, Perlas Pilipinas
MALACCA, MALAYSIA - Payback time for Perlas Pilipinas.
The Filipinas beat Indonesia, 72-56, in the Seaba Women's Championship at the Bukit Serindit Indoor Stadium on Friday night to settle an old score against the team that beat them in last year's Southeast Asian Game.
Allana Lim finished with a near double-double of 24 points and nine rebounds while Cindy Resultay contributed 15 to lead the Filipinas to the morale-boosting win ahead of their virtual championship showdown with Malaysia.
"They have this belief that they won against us in the SEA Games and they can beat us again. But we came prepared also. But it's payback time. We had the chance to win the gold, but we lost to Indonesia," said Perlas coach Pat Aquino.
Indonesia played its best game of the tournament against the Philippine but couldn't come no closer than eight points, 51-43, in the third period.
But baskets from Lim and a split from the free-throw line from Ambi Almazan pushed Perlas' lead back to 15, 68-53, with 4:11 left, all securing the Filipinas' fourth successive win.
The Philippines plays Malaysia in a make-or-break game on Saturday, with the Filipinas looking to win the gold medal for the first time in six years.
Overall, the Philippines out rebounded Indonesia, 56-37.

Abueva: ‘I gave my all but it still wasn’t enough’
10:16 AM
2016 Rio Olympics, basketball, Calvin Abueva, Gilas Pilipinas, Road to Rio
It may be a painful pill to swallow, but Calvin Abueva knows he did all he could for the national team.
Along with LA Tenorio, the energetic Kapampangan forward were the last two cuts from Gilas Pilipinas as head coach Tab Baldwin finalized his 12-man roster last Sunday.
In a report from Sports5, Abueva detailed the pains he felt as the news broke in Bologna, Italy.
“Kinutuban na ako pero alam kong di naman ako nagkulang sa ginawa ko. Lahat naman binigay ko pero kulang pa pala,” said Abueva, who was a key member of the national team that bagged the silver medal in the 2015 Fiba Asia Championship in China.
It was truly a deep wound to heal from, especially for someone like Abueva, who laid everything out whenever he was on the floor.
“Ramdam ko lahat ngayon. Yung sakit ng katawan, yung pagod, yung miss mo yung pamilya mo. Dati kasi iniisip ko lang para sa bayan naman. Ngayon ko lang naramdaman lahat,” he said.
The Gilas Pilipinas contingent is set to return home late Tuesday, and though it hurts, Abueva will now set his sights on his PBA ballclub Alaska.
Abueva has powered the Aces to three consecutive Finals appearances, all resulting to runner-up finishes.
He also nabbed his first Best Player of the Conference award in the 2016 PBA Governors’ Cup.
“Masakit pero kailangang tanggapin,” Abueva said. “At least ngayon pwede na ako mag-focus ulit sa PBA team ko.”

Gilas avoids late collapse to win tune-up against Iran

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine national basketball team nearly blew a double-digit lead in the second half but managed to get enough stops and baskets down the stretch of the fourth quarter to defeat Iran, 81-70, in a tune-up game on Wednesday, June 8, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
A big basket with continuation off a broken play by naturalized Filipino Andray Blatche proved to be the biggest shot of the game, giving Gilas Pilipinas a victory before embarking on their training camp in Europe.
The national team leaves on Friday for Greece where it will have a 10-day training camp, to be followed by tune-up games against the Turkish national team in Turkey and then versus China, Canada, and Italy in Italy.
Gilas will be back in Manila on June 28.
Blatche played well for Gilas with 20 points and 11 boards while Terrence Romeo and Ray Parks provided 12 and 11 points, respectively, off the bench. Ryan Reyes also played well with 12 points.
Despite missing Marcio Lassiter and Jeff Chan, Gilas shot relatively well from downtown by going 9-of-23 and also limited its turnovers to 12.
Iran, who was playing with a younger core than the Philippines has become accustomed to, was led by the 16 points and 3 boards of Behnam Yakhchali.

Doctors fear June Mar Fajardo suffered partially torn ACL, out for PBA Finals and Olympic qualifiers
12:30 PM
basketball, Junemar Fajardo, Road to Rio
DOCTORS fear two-time PBA MVP June Mar Fajardo is out not only for the Philippine Cup Finals against Alaska but also Gilas Pilipinas' coming campaign in the Fiba Olympic Qualifying Tournament in July.
Sources from the San Miguel Corp. camp bared that an MRI scan done on Fajardo's left knee at the St. Luke's Hospital on Friday night revealed a partial tear on his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).
“May partial tear eh. Kaya malabo na siya maglaro sa finals. Pati yung (Olympic) wildcard (qualifiers) damay," a source told Spin.ph. "Kasi hindi talaga siya makalakad.”
Fajardo's left knee has been put on an immobilizer, the source added, and the 6-10 national player can’t walk without the aid of crutches when he left the hospital early Saturday morning.
San Miguel has yet to make an official announcement at posting time.
The real extent of the damage - and the time Fajardo will have to sit out - will be known in a second check up with famed orthopedic surgeon Raul Canlas on Monday, the source added.
While Fajardo is almost certainly out of the PBA Finals, his stint with Gilas will largely depend on the nunber of fibers torn in the ACL - and the time it will take for him to recover.
“Hindi pa alam ng mga therapist kung ilang fiber ang napunit, 'yun ang aalamin ni Doc Canlas sa Monday,” said the source. “But definitely, malabo na siya sa finals kasi hindi talaga siya makalakad."
The injury happened at the 7:22 mark of the third quarter of Game Six, which saw a Fajardo-less San Miguel complete a 90-82 victory over Rain or Shine to clinch a place in the best-of-seven finals.
Here's the sequence:
In the sequence, Fajardo apparently hyperextended his left knee when he came into contact with the legs of Rain or Shine guard Jireh Ybanes, who tried to box him out in a rebound battle.
Former Red Bull Thunder team doctor John Lim shook his head upon hearing about the extent of Fajardo’s injury.
“Depende kasi sa damage 'yan at dami ng napunit na fiber. Pero hindi siya makakalaro kaagad definitely. Depende kasi sa gravity ng injury 'yan,” said Lim, who stressed that the ACL is the most sensitive part of an athlete’s knee.
“Normally kasi, pag partial tear at walang gaanong punit, three to six weeks 'yan. Mamamaga yan at sasakit pa ng matagal-tagal. Pag 50 percent ng fiber napunit, mga atleast two months 'yun. Full ACL tear kasi six months recovery and therapy yun,” he added.

PH lone Asian bid for Rio qualifier
2:37 PM
basketball, Rio Olympics, Road to Rio
BASKETBALL godfather Manny V. Pangilinan said that he is “happy and relieved” to learn that the Philippines is the only Asian country bidding to host one of three wildcard legs the Fiba will be staging in July next year for berths in the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
The chair of the governing Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, Pangilinan initially didn’t know that Iran had dropped out of the race and that only six countries are now left to slug it out to host the three legs.
“I am happy and relieved (to learn) that we are the only Asian country (left) bidding,” Pangilinan said in a text message to the Inquirer on Friday night. “Although, of course, the decision will ultimately be Fiba’s, I am hopeful the Philippines would make the grade.”
The Czech Republic, Italy, Serbia, Turkey and Germany are the only other countries in the running. Being able to host a wildcard leg will be a big boost to the Filipinos’ chances of tabbing one of three available slots for the Games.
“We need that precious sixth man cheering our Gilas team on,” said Pangilinan, a member of the Fiba’s Central Board.
The winning bid will be known Jan. 19.

SMB pair June Mar Fajardo, Marcio Lassiter confirm attendance in first Gilas pool practice
JUNE Mar Fajardo and Marcio Lassiter have confirmed their attendance in the first practice of the new Gilas Pilipinas pool on Monday night, guaranteeing national coach Tab Baldwin a full complement of players when the team begins preparation for the Olympic wildcard qualifiers.
Gilas team manager Butch Antonio told Spin.ph on Sunday he has gotten in touch with touch with the help of PBA president and CEO Chito Salud and SMB governor and league chairman Robert Non, with both confirming that they'll join the rest in a 17-man pool on Monday at the Meralco gym.
"Marcio and June Mar will be at practice tomorrow," said Antonio.
This will mark the 6-10 Fajardo's return to the Gilas program after the two-time league MVP sat out the national team's stint in the last Fiba Asia Championship in Changsha, China, citing plantar fasciitis injuries on both feet.
On the other hand, Lassiter will be joining the national team for the first time since begging off from the 2014 Gilas 2.0 pool along with Greg Slaughter.
The two will join Gilas 3.0 holdovers Marc Pingris, Troy Rosario, Calvin Abueva, Gabe Norwood, Matt Ganuelas Rosser, Ranidel de Ocampo, Jayson Castro, and Terrence Romeo, Rain or Shine's Jeff Chan and Paul Lee, Star's Ian Sangalang, Talk 'N Text's Ryan Reyes, and Ginebra's LA Tenorio, Japeth Aguilar and Slaughter in the first of the once-a-week practices spread over seven months leading up to the Olympic qualifiers in July.
De Ocampo recently suffered a herniated disc in a freak gym accident and won't be able to join the practices, but Antonio confirmed that Gilas pool members arriving from Dubai - namely Abueva, Tenorio, Slaughter and Aguilar - have expressed an intention to join the Monday practice.
Baldwin said he is thrilled to have the best players available for the Olympic qualifiers, but readily made it known that he expects a fierce competition forplaces in the team during the seven-month buildup.
Depending on the availability of naturalized player Andray Blatche and Fil-Am guard Jordan Clarkson, Baldwin will have to cut a maximum seven players and a minimum five before the tournament.

BATANG Gilas salvaged some measure of pride, claiming fifth place in the Fiba Asia Under 16 Championship with an 89-74 victory over Lebanon on Saturday at the Arena Britama in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Jonas Tibayan scored 16 points as Batang Gilas wound up with a six wins in eight games played.
The young Filipino cagers wind up several slots off the second place finish of the 2013 Batang Gilas squad, and misses out on the Fiba Under 17 World Championship.
Only the top three in the Asian joust move on to the world meet, but the Filipinos can take solace in the strong finish in the 15-team continental championship.
The Philippines’ chances of booking a return trip to the Under-17 worlds were dashed by Japan in the quarterfinals, leaving Batang Gilas to battle for fifth at best.
They made sure to secure that spot, with nine of 12 players fielded making it to the scoreboard and five registering twin-digit marks.
Kris Harvey Pagsanjan and Samjosef Belangel had 13 points each, Dave Ildefoso chipped in with 12 and Gian Mamuyac added 10.
In the preliminaries, the Philippines eased past Bahrain, 98-58; downed Thailand, 70-51; before coming up with a 2-1 record in the second round.
Batang Gilas turned back Iraq, 78-69, before being dealt its first loss by Korea, 74-77, but came up with a huge 78-72 win over titleholder China.
The young Filipino cagers, however, started flat against a hot-starting Japan and fell on the first hurdle of the knockout stages.
Salim Alaaeddine led all scorers with 28 points and Georges El Beyrouty had 20 for Lebanon.
The scores:
Batang Gilas 89 - Tibayan 16, Pagsanjan 13, Belangel 13, Ildefonso 12, Mamuyac 10, De Liano 9, Gozum 8, Credo 6, Publico 2, Lagumen 0, Escalona 0.
Lebanon 74 – Alaaeddine 28, El Beyrouty 20, Zeinoun 15, Ziade 4, Nemer 4, Captan 3, Hachem 0, Belmona 0, Saad 0, Tabet 0.
Quarterscores: 17-14; 50-34; 71-52; 89-74.

Tab Baldwin wants fierce competition for places as Gilas pool gathers for first practice
12:53 PM
basketball, Gilas Pilipinas, Road to Rio, Tab Baldwin
WHEN members of the new Gilas Pilipinas pool gather for the first time on Monday at the Meralco gym, they better not expect a picnic outside of the pre-practice niceties.
Tab Baldwin isn't.
The national coach wants to hit the ground running when Gilas begins its preparations for the Olympic wildcard qualifiers in July, setting the tone for the Monday-only, once-a-week practices spread over seven months by saying he expects each one of the players to compete for his place in the team.
Seventeen of the best players in the PBA loaned to the national team program will be at Baldwin's disposal, giving the American-New Zealander more depth and size than he ever had in the Gilas squad he took to the final of the last Fiba Asia championship in Changsha, China.
While he's absolutely thrilled about that, Baldwin was also quick to point out that five of those 17 players will not make the final 12-man team to the Olympic qualifiers, or may be more depending on the availability of naturalized player Andray Blatche and Fil-American guard Jordan Clarkson.
By that, everyone should know that no one is guaranteed a spot in the team.
"That people will be given something without having to work or compete for it, you know that's not the nature of sports," Baldwin told Spin.ph.
"In sports, we should be competing for something as precious as wearing the Gilas uniform. It's incredibly honorable to wear that and it should never be assumed that it's the right of any player. It's not, it's a privilege."
That mindset should be there from the first day of practice, when Baldwin will be clear with what he expects from the players and what he will demand from each of them over a seven-month period until the 'cream rises to the top.'
He can't wait to get started.
"I'm really looking forward to it. There's really I lot a wanna do with this group of players in terms of building them into a strong basketball team," Baldwin said.
"I've never really spoken to any of the players, I'm waiting until we assemble on Monday, and we will be starting things out by trying to set the tone of what it's gonna mean to be in this team and the fact that the guys, six or seven of them or more, maybe, depends on Clarkson, depends on Blatche, will not be included in the final team, so it's gonna be very competitive, and I want it to be competitive."
Baldwin isn't sure if the early start, which will give Gilas around 20 to 25 once-a-week practices before the players get together for the final month of the buildup, will be better than the two months his Fiba Asia team got on the way to a runner-up finish behind China in Changsha.
But the veteran internationalist intends to make the most of it as they prepare for what he expects to be a 'brutally difficult' tournament against some of the best teams in the world.
Asked what he intends to accomplish during those Monday-only practices, Baldwin said, "I'd like to think that during that seven-month period we'd be able to introduce the system that we'll be using and then we can refine those and work on them at the last period that we have before the tournament.
"But also we would like to develop a very strong team chemistry. This is difficult when you are only meeting once a week but we want to try and do that. And I want to make the players understand that when they come into the Gilas environment, they will bring all of their talents but they also bring a mentality and attitude that is specific to what we're trying to accomplish."
And what does he expect from the players?
"We want them to be great communicators; I want all of them to be great leaders and ambassadors for the team and the game, and I want them to understand that this tournament will be brutally difficult. But we wanna go there and we wanna set our sights on winning games and qualifying for the Olympics.
"I expect all the players to grow physically and mentally and collectively as a team. And those that do a best job of that will be the ones who will ultimately be named to the team."
Tab Balwin says he expects all the players in the Gilas pool to 'grow physically and mentally and collectively as a team.' Jerome Ascano

Giant Fil-Aussie kid applies for PH passport, dreams of Gilas stint
8:45 PM
basketball, Batang Gilas
MANILA, Philippines – Fil-Australian Ethan Kirkness took the first step in his quest of playing for the country in the future by applying for a Philippines a passport.
The 6-foot-8 kid who will turn 14 hopes to get his Philippine passport before his birthday on February 23 next year. FIBA requires a dual citizen to be holding a passport of the country which he wants to represent in their official tournaments before he reaches the age of 16.
“It will take up to eight weeks to process. Hopefully, it will be released by the first week of January,” Michael Kirkness, Ethan’s father, told Philstar.com on Wednesday.
The Kirkness family has been following the Batang Gilas’ campaign in the FIBA Asia U16.
“Yes, we’ve been following their games. They beat China last night and we congratulate them for showing big heart despite their center only standing 6’4”. Imagine, if we can get Ethan playing there,” Michael said.
On Tuesday night, the Batang Gilas with only UPIS big man Will Gozum standing tallest at 6’4” dealt China, whose average height is 6’6”, its first ever loss in the history of tournament ending the three-time champion’s winning streak at 33 games with a stirring 78-72 victory.
It was redemption of sorts for the country as the senior national team lost to China in the gold medal game of the FIBA Asia men’s championship in Changsha, China last month.
The Kirkness family has long been dreaming of Ethan playing for Batang Gilas and hopefully the men’s senior team in the future ever since the country returned to basketball prominence starting off with the silver medal run in the 2013 FIBA Asia tournament and a gallant stand in the 2014 FIBA World Cup.
Ethan, whose mother is the 5-foot-10 former Dinah Blando from Dumaguete, went to the country last year with the whole family to attend a relative’s wedding and at the same time check out potential school for him with good basketball programs.
Though nothing concrete came out of the Kirkness’ trip here that was highlighted by campus visits to San Beda, La Salle, Ateneo and NU, Michael is still hoping that a benefactor would sponsor his son’s further development in basketball.
“He is doing well but we need access to better training. He’s just playing in school and local competition but is very low level,” Michael said.
Ethan is currently playing for Southport High School and at the same time with the Gold Coast Seahawks U16 team in Queensland, Australia.
Last June, Ethan had a chance to work out with Chicago Bulls’ Australian big man Cameron Bairstow.
Ethan Kirkness working out with Chicago Bulls' sophomore forward Cameron Bairstow last June.
Recently, Michael took Ethan to Sydney and watched the Sydney Kings play the Townsville Crocs.
The Kings won that game, 87-78, on Al Harrington’s debut with the team. Harrington finished with 12 while another former NBA player Marcus Thornton hit 14 for the home team.
The Kings’ 6-foot-10 center Julian Khazzouh, who led the team with 22 points, nine boards and six blocks in the game, was shocked to learn that Ethan is only 13 years old.
“You need to talk to someone from the Kings pronto,” Khazzouh was quoted saying to Michael.
Ethan Kirkness with Sydney Kings' 6-foot-10 star center Julian Khazzouh.
“I put a sign on Ethan’s back saying he’s only 13. Everyone [in the arena] thinks he is 18,” Michael recounted. “The game has plenty of tall men there so until they know his age, they just look past you.”
Michael and his family want Ethan’s heft and height to be developed and put into good use. And they are hoping it would be the Philippines rather than Australia which he will represent down the road as FIBA Asia and Oceania will be merged in the new World Cup and Olympic qualifying tournament that is set to be introduced next year.

BATANG Gilas soothed its wounded pride by trouncing Thailand, 81-46, on Friday in the classification phase of the Fiba Under-16 basketball tournament in Indonesia.
The Filipinos, fresh from a shock quarterfinal loss to Japan the day before, went on a 33-9 tear in the second quarter for a 56-25 lead at halftime at the Britama Arena in Jakarta.
The Filipino teens now take on the winner of the Lebanon-Kuwait match for fifth place in this age-group tournament where they dealt China its first ever loss, only to miss out on the semifinals for the first time since 2009.
Juan Gomez de Liano led the charge with 16 points on 4-of-9 three-point shooting with nine rebounds. Rap Escalona rediscovered his outside shooting going 3 of 4 from beyond the arc for 11 points.
Sam Belangel, Dave Ildefonso and Will Gozum each scored 10 points for the Gilas cause.

Japan ends Batang Gilas’ title hopes with wire-to-wire win in Fiba Asia Under-16 quarterfinals

BATANG GILAS fell into a deep hole early and failed to pull itself out, bowing to a hot-shooting Japan, 73-66, on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Fiba Asia Under-16 Championship in at the Arena Britama in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Thrust into the limelight with a stunning win over China in the second round, the Batang Gilas couldn’t live up to expectations, starting flat as the Japanese rained treys on them for a 23-9 advantage after 10 minutes of play.
Batang Gilas bows out of the race for a berth in the 2016 Fiba Under 17 World Championship in Spain. The team falls way short of the 2013 squad’s second place finish that earned it a stint in the 2014 worlds.
The Philippines side of the scoreboard stayed blank until the 5:02 mark, when Samjosef Belangel split his charities off a Keisuke Mimori foul. By then Japan was 14 points clear.
The Filipinos somehow found their range in the second, but the Japanese still made their shots and outscored Batang Gilas 23-21 for a 46-30 halftime count.
The Philippines was relegated to the classification round, where it would try and salvage fifth place starting with a match against Thailand, which was beaten in the quarterfinals by Chinese Taipei, 88-39.
Japan and Chinese Taipei face off in the semifinals. Korea also earlier advanced with a 105-79 victory over Lebanon and await the winner of the quarterfinal match between China and Kuwait.
The Japanese led by as many as 23 points before the Philippines trimmed it to seven in the fourth, but the rally came a little too late.
Belangel wound up with 20 points and Jason Credo had 11 but no other Filipino registered twin-digit marks. Gian Mamuyac, Batang Gilas’ top scorer entering the game with 15.2, came up with just two points, making just one of 12 shots.

The young Filipinos accomplished what their elder counterparts couldn’t pull off, turning back the much taller Chinese squad in the continental competition and China's first loss ever in the Under-16 tourney in 31 games dating back to 2009.
Batang Gilas moves to 4-1, the same record as China after the win that comes exactly one month after Gilas Pilipinas lost to host China, 67-78, in the Fiba Asia final in Changsha.
Kris Harvey Pagsanjan and Jason Mari Lorenzo hit back-to-back triples to put the Philippinnes ahead 73-72 and Jonas Tibayan extended the lead with a jumper to help Batang Gilas hold on for the win.
