PH flag-bearer Ian Lariba bows out of Olympics after loss to Congo's Han Xing in Rio opener

RIO DE JANEIRO—Ian Lariba bowed out in her first match, losing to Han Xing of Congo, 11-7, 13-11, 11-9, 11-7, on Saturday morning (Saturday night, Manila time) in the table tennis women’s singles of the Olympics.

Lariba had a competitive match against Han but couldn’t pull off a set victory to end her Olympic stint just after carrying the Philippine flag in the parade of nations.

Another Filipina qualifies for Rio Olympics as Ian Lariba books ticket through Asian table tennis qualifying in HK

IAN Lariba defied tough odds to become the first ever Filipino table tennis player to qualify for the Olympics.

Lariba, a varsity player for La Salle in the UAAP, beat Indonesia’s Lilis Indriani, 11-6, 11-2, 11-8, 11-5, in the women’s singles on Saturday night in the 2016 ITTF-Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament in Hong Kong to secure the 11th and final Olympic seat in her event.

Lariba thus became the fifth Filipino athlete to earn a ticket to the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, joining Eric Cray of athletics, Rogen Ladon and Charly Suarez of boxing, and Kirstie Elaine Alora of taekwondo, who also earned an Olympic berth on Saturday.

Lariba had a tough road to Rio as she lost to Orawan Paranang of Thailand, 11-6, 11-2, 11-4, 13-11, in Stage One Southeast Asia bracket, relegating her to Draw D in Stage Two of the competition.

The La Salle netter made waves in the classification phase as she beat Maha Faramarzi of Qatar, 11-5, 11-1, 11-7, 11-4, and Mahjobeh Omran of Iran, 11-6, 15-13, 11-8, 7-11, 10-12, 11-8, before losing to Nanthana Komwong of Thailand in the Draw D final for the Olympic berth.

In the do-or-die match for the 11th and final Olympic slot, Lariba cruised past the Indonesian, sweeping the best-of-seven match to formally claim the ticket to Rio.

Lariba was MVP in UAAP Season 78, leading La Salle to the league crown. She also saw action in the Southeast Asian Games in Singapore last year.

PH paralympian shines in table tennis

Paralympian Josephine Medina reigned supreme in the women’s singles class 6-8 event of the Copa Tango Table Tennis Tournament held in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Medina, a fourth placer in the 2012 Paralympic Games in London, blasted Elena Livinenko of Russia in the finals via an 11-7 11-5, 13-15, 11-7 decision.

“It was a really tough match, I´m very happy because it´s my second time here and I was able to win the gold medal once again. Elena was a very strong opponent, she is a very attack minded player; I was very focused, I tried to keep the ball on the table and change the speed of the play. The key was to be patient and to play safely,” narrated Medina at the tournamen’s official website.

Medina made it to the finals by beating Sweden’s Anna-Carin Ahlquist, Colombia’s Nelly Sanchez and Chile’s Ailyn Espindola.

“I want to thank all the support I receive from my country and also I must thank the organizers here in Buenos Aires,” she said.

Medina hopes to qualify anew in the Paralympic Games to be held next year in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. But the Filipina netter must maintain her spot in the world ranking. She’s currently ranked fifth in the world.

“I’m hoping to qualify to Rio; so far I’m no.5, so hope to be there. It’s the dream for me and for my country the Philippines, it is not just for myself; in London it was the first time I had qualified for the Paralympic Games, I hope it will be the same again next year,” ended Medina.

Veteran Richard Gonzales assured of table tennis bronze after beating former SEAG champ

SINGAPORE — Richard Gonzales defeated Tran Tuan Quynh of Vietnam, 11-3, 11-6, 15-13, to clinch a berth in the semifinals and be assured of a bronze medal in the men’s table tennis singles competition of the 28th Southeast Asian Games.

The 44-year-old Gonzales beat Quynh, the 2003 SEA Games gold medalist, in straight sets to raise his record to 3-0 in Group C of the preliminaries. He will take on the No. 1 seed in the bracket regardless of the result of his final preliminary match against a Malaysian.

The top players from each of the four groups will move to the semifinals.

But Gonzales admitted struggling to put away the Vietnamese in the third set.

“Medyo gumanda rin ‘yung palo nung kabila. Medyo nag-aadjust pa siya nung first two sets,” said Gonzales, a 20-year national team veteran.

Table Tennis Association of the Philippines president Ting Ledesma said he is still expecting medals in the team event where Gonzales is also entered.

Gonzales beat Thavisack Phathaphone of Laos, 11-2, 11-4, 11-4, on Monday before needing five sets to turn back Ficky Santoso of Indonesia, 6-11, 11-7, 11-8, 6-11, 12-10, on Tuesday.
