Athlete's Profile: Marcus Douthit

Marcus Douthit towers his competitor, making him a valuable asset as a prolific shot blocker.
Standing at 2.1 metres in height, Marcus Eugene Douthit represents Philippines in the sport of Basketball, usually taking on the critical position of centre or power forward. One of Douthit’s distinctive traits is his large wingspan and incredible reach, making him an invaluable defensive player on the court. He is known by many to be a prolific shot blocker with great timing and sharp instinct.

A native of New York, Douthit went to Providence College to take up a bachelor’s degree in social science. During his freshman year, he ranked 11th in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Men's Division I with an average of 3.0 blocks per game. More impressively, he bagged his first college career double double in a match against Brown University, scoring a career high of 22 points and collecting 11 rebounds. Douthit improved his performance during senior year and pushed his ranking to 7th with an average of 3.2 blocks per game. Throughout his years of playing college basketball, Douthit was awarded the prestigious Marvin Barnes Defensive Player Award twice for his outstanding defensive performance.
After graduation, Douthit played in the NBA Development League with the Albuquerque Thunderbirds, coached by Michael Cooper. During the championship game, Douthit scored 11 points and collected 15 rebounds to help the team win the 2005-06 NBA D-League Championship. He has also enjoyed spells in the Belgian, Turkish and Russian professional basketball leagues, on top of making the pre-season cut for National Basketball Association (NBA) teams Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers.
In 2010, Douthit started his Asian career with the Gilas Pilipinas, playing as an import player in the 2010 MVP Invitational Championship. He scored 10 points and 11 rebounds to help the team defeat Jordan in the championship game and clinch the trophy.
The Filipino coaches were impressed with Douthit’s performance and recommended him as a Gilas’ top prospect for naturalization. In 2011, Douthit finally became a naturalized Philippine citizen allowing him to officially play for the Philippines basketball team in international competitions.
