Big scare for Philippine team as Alyssa Valdez slips, falls awkwardly in practice

SINGAPORE — The Philippine women’s volleyball team got a scare on Saturday when Alyssa Valdez slipped during practice after the celebrated squad played a tune-up game against Singapore ahead of the 28th Southeast Asian Games.
Larong Volleyball ng Pilipinas Inc. (LVPI) president Joey Romasanta said Valdez was doing her spiking routine following their tune-up match against Singapore when she slipped and fell awkwardly on the floor.
The entire team, Romasanta said, stopped and held its breath after seeing Valdez grimace and hold on to her hamstring.
“Nadulas sa may net. Tumigil lahat dahil hawak-hawak niya ’yung hita niya. Sabi ko, ’Naku, lintik ako, na-hamstring ata,’” said Romasanta.
“We had worrisome moments,” the LVPI president and Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) vice president shared.
Fortunately, Valdez, the country’s flag bearer during the opening ceremony, was able to get up after a few minutes with Romasanta getting the assurance that the Ateneo Lady Eagle is fine.
“Tumayo, buti na lang. Napa-upo kasi. Siguro after two minutes, she was back to her spiking routine,” said Romasanta.
