Huey, Gonzales keep PH Cuppers’ bid alive

Treat Huey and Ruben Gonzales dominated their doubles opponents yesterday as the Philippines stayed alive, 2-1, in its Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group 2 tie against Chinese Taipei in Kaohsiung.
With the Cebuana Lhuillier-Philippine team dropping the opening singles Friday, the partnership of Huey and Gonzales fought with ferocity to fashion out a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-3) win against Taiwanese Peng Hsien-yin and Lee Hsin-han.

The Philippines now needs to sweep the reverse singles today to pull off the win that would put the Filipinos in the Group 2 finals.

Team officials would not reveal the country’s roster for the crucial singles.

Jeson Patrombon, the PH No. 1 player, fell to Hung Jui-chen, 6-2, 6-2, 6-1, while Patrick John Tierro bowed to Chinese Taipei top player Lu Yen-hsun, 6-2, 6-2, 6-1,  last Friday.

“Who will play tomorrow is still undecided. It’s possible that either one of them (Huey and Gonzales) or maybe both of them can play,” said Randy Villanueva, the PH Davis Cup administrator.
