COMING off a blissful finish in her recent international competition, Baguio City athlete Katherine Khay Santos seeks another stunning outing in the 2015 Southeast Asian Games in Singapore next month.
With four weeks of preparations before the 28th edition of the SEA Games, Santos starts her rigid training as she eyes to bring home medals from the upcoming international sports competition slated June 5-16.
The former University of Baguio Cardinal is most likely among the top bets of the Philippine contingent to help in the country’s medal haul.
The 24-year-old athlete will be competing in the track and field contest particularly in the 100-meter dash and the long jump event.
"I will surely give my best come the competition dates but as of the moment I am trying to focus on feeling my up-tempo in time for the SEA Games," said Santos, who won a bronze medal in the recent 77th Singapore Open Track and Field Championships in Singapore April this year.
In March, Santos was given the title as the Philippines' fastest female sprinter at the close of the 2015 Philippine National Open-Invitational Athletics Championship held at the San Luis Sports Complex in Laguna.
Santos crossed the finish line with an astounding time of 11.99 seconds to take home the gold medal in the 100-meter dash of the 2015 Philippine Open and even saved second honors in the long jump event with 6.25 meter best following the ranks of compatriot and SEA Games gold medallist Maritella Santos who topped the event with 6.49 meters.
"I am glad I am slowly getting closer to my dreams of becoming a premier athlete for our country, if things will go my way in the SEA Games it will be a great confidence boost for my sports career," she said.
The Baguio City National high School alumnus, set to receive an Alumni Athlete’s Award from her former school later this month, marked her personal best time of 11.97 seconds in the 100 meter dash at the 2015 Fullerton Ben Brown Invitational at California, USA previously in March.
According to the Philippine Sports Commission, Santos is seen as the country’s next Lydia de Vega.
She is presently on her fourth year with the Philippine women’s track and field team, marking her first international stint with a bronze medal at the 2011 SEA Games in Indonesia.
