SEAG contender Cray sets 100m national mark
3:36 PM
athletics, SEAGames2015
MANILA, Philippines – Eric Cray erased an eight-year-old Philippine record in the 100 meters dash and installed himself one of the favorites to win the century dash in the Southeast Asian Games this June in Singapore.
Cray ran 10.33 seconds in the Bob Cat Invitational in Texas Saturday in Houston, Texas, reported track and field statistician Andrew Pirie. He was third in this event. The old record was 10.45 by Ralph Soguilon in 2007 in Claremont, California.
His time surpassed the winning mark of 10.41 by Jeerapong Minapra of Thailand in the 2013 SEA Games in Myanmar.
In a Facebook message, Soguilon congratulated Cray for setting the new record. "Proud of previously breaking the then 45-yr old Phillippine record ( 10.78 by Rogelio Onofre) and holding it for 8 yrs. I now hope this would be the start of an improved Philippine sprinting. Looking forward to more sprinters running under 10.50 seconds."
Renato Unso, secretary-general of the Philippine Amateur Track and Field Association, told Rappler that Cray's name will be entered in the 100 meters during the managers' meeting a few days before the athletics competition.
"He (Cray) could be a contender (for the gold)," said Unso. The Philippines has never won this event since joining the SEA Games in 1977.
His entry will boost the Philippines' chances of increasing its 7-gold tally in Myanmar.
The Philippines is leaning on three Fil-Ams, including Cray to achieve this. The Fil-Ams are Caleb Stuart in the shot put and discus and Donovont Arriola in the long jump. Other gold medal hopes are pole vaulter Ernest John Obiena, who upset defending SEA Games champion Kreeta Sintawachewa of Thailand last month, Archand Christian Bagsit in the 400 meters, Christopher Ulboc in the 3,000m steeplechase and Eduardo Buenavista in the marathon.
Cray is defending his 400m hurdles title and is a reserve in the 4x400m relay squad, which is also aiming to keep its crown in Singapore.

Perlas Pilipinas off to Taipei for intensive training as part of SEA Games prep
10:53 PM
basketball, Perlas Pilipinas
The Philippine national women’s basketball team will heading to Taiwan from May 11 to 15 for training as part of their preparations for the Southeast Asian Games.
Wilbert Loa, team manager of the Perlas Pilipinas national team, told InterAksyon.com in an exclusive interview that the team will test itself against some top flight competition during the trip.
“We will have three tuneup games in Taiwan, then we will continue our training all the way to June,” Loa said.
The recently-formed squad will be coached by former University of the Philippines Fighting Maroon Patrick Aquino. He will be joined assisted by his longtime UP teammate Paul Du and former pro Aries Dimaunahan.
The team is composed of Afril Onedo Bernardino, Shelly Anne Gupilan, Analyn Escosio Almazan, Merenciana Rosette Arayi, Fria Albarico Bernardo, Allana May Lim, Maria Beatrice Daez, Roco Cindy Resultay, Sofia Roman, Camille Tudoc Sambile, Danica Jose, and Claire Castro and is supported by Blackwater and Smart Communications.
According to Loa, the team should be formidable enough to medal in the SEA Games.
“This team is composed of several veterans and other crack players from the UAAP. The Mythical Five members of the UAAP are included in this team,” he said.
Aquino added that playing against top women’s teams from Taiwan will be a fitting workout for the squad to gauge where they are at this stage of their preparations.
“It will be beneficial in our preparation for the SEA Games. Taiwan’s women’s teams are some of the best in the world,” the coach said.

Flag and country
11:30 PM
athletics, SEAGames2015
IT’S official: Cebu’s pride and beloved runner Mary Joy Tabal will represent the country in the 28th Southeast Asian Games on June 5 to 16 in Singapore.
The Philippines will be fielding Tabal – the country’s current fastest woman marathoner—in the distaff side of a 42-kilometer grind.
The diminutive Filipina has tucked countless titles under her belt, including the back-to-back titles in the National Milo Marathon.
Tabal, who finished at 27th overall in the LA Marathon last month, received an email from Philippine Amateur Track and Field Association (Patafa) president Philip Ella Juico this week, confirming her participation in the SEA Games.
The bemedalled runner of Talamban, Cebu was overwhelmed by the chance to represent the country this international sporting event.
Tabal said she was told last year that she has a chance to join SEA Games, but she did not expect that much because most of the athletes that will be sent are Philippine team members.
“I am very happy and proud to represent the country in the SEA Games. Joining international running events has been my goal as a runner. Not all are given this opportunity, I am fulfilled that as a runner, I achieved something,” Tabal told Sun.Star Cebu. “This SEA Games slot is my opportunity to gauge my ranking in Southeast Asia.”
Tabal, 25, has joined races in Paris, Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong.
Tabal holds the country’s current women’s best time in a marathon at 2:48, which she set in the Milo Marathon.
“I can’t tell of my chances in the SEA Games yet because I’m not yet 100 percent ready for the race. But I think one of my toughest competitors would be the Thai-American, who has a best time of 2:40,” said Tabal.
Tabal who’s training with her long-time coach and running partner John Philip DueƱas, said they will be doing their training program in Cebu.
“I have the best resources for training here in Cebu. At least I can prove that an athlete can train at any place, but of course it will depend on your program, the athlete’s dedication and hard work, and the guidance of the coach,” she said.
Tabal Patafa will provide support during her training stint.
“They haven’t instructed me yet on the other details on what to do. But I hope that they will provide me with training allowance to support my training program so that I would not be tempted to join fun runs. I have to provide for my nutrition and supplements while training,” said Tabal, who will be the country’s lone participant in the women’s marathon.
Meanwhile, former Cebu-based and now national team member Mary Grace delos Santos will be joining the 10,000-meter run.
The Philippines finished at seventh place last in 2013 SEA Games in Myanmar with 29 golds, 34 silvers and 38 bronze medals.

Filipino boxers off off to good start in AIBA President’s Cup
10:15 PM
boxing, SEAGames2015
PALEMBANG, Indonesia — Six Filipino boxers scored victories to kickstart Team Philippines’ campaign in the 22nd AIBA President’s Cup at the refurbished Palembang Sports and Convention Center here.
Eumir Felix Marcial, Mario Fernandez, Joel Bacho, Roldan Boncales Jr. and Junel Cantancio all notched wins in their respective categories while 2014 World Women’s Championships silver medal winner Nesthy Petecio also grabbed a triumph.
Marcial virtually schooled his Indonesian opponent Lodwicjk Batlayery, scoring heavily with wicked lefts that had his foe shaking his head, vainly trying to clear cobwebs. Mercifully, the referee stopped the fight after a second standing 8-count in the second round.
Myanmar SEA Games gold medalist and Incheon Asian Games bronze medalist Fernandez likewise made short work of Siguito Marquez of Timor Leste, stopping the latter in the second round with a cracking right cross that made the Timorese turn his back and hang on to the ropes in surrender.
Bacho had to go the full three rounds for a decision win against a tough Malaysian Asian and Commonwealth Games veteran, Khir Akyazlan Azmi.
Boncales used guile and speed to earn a unanimous decision over a tenacious Nat Sieknin of Cambodia.
The veteran Cantancio, nicknamed by his team mated “Unli” for his boundless energy and relentless attacking style, rained blows on Nguyen Van Hai and opened a nasty gash on the Vietnamese boxers’ right eyebrow which caused a TKO stoppage in the second round.
Only first timer Aldren Moreno (light flyweight), suffered a setback against the top Japanese in the division, Tsuboi Tomoya. It was a slam bang affair that had the crowd cheering as both fighters gave it their all.
Meanwhile, Petecio exacted revenge on her conqueror in the 2010 Barbados World Championships when she was but 17 years old, Russian Elena Savelyeva.
Petecio, now 23, and several inches shorter than the Savelyeva, sneaked in several clear head blows to thwart her rugged opponent.
The other Filipino women were unfortunate to bow in their opening matches. Palawan’s Maricris Igam lost to Indian Devi Sarjubala in a closely contested match.
First time internationalist Aira Villegas of Tacloban City took the fight early to another seasoned boxer from India, 25 year-old Pinki Rani but succumbed to the clever veteran in another tight match.
Riza Pasuit displayed unorthodox but very active moves but bowed to long-time Thai campaigner Tassamalee Thongjan, a World Championship bronze medalist.
“We’re quite satisfied with our performance here so far”. said ABAP Head Coach Pat Gaspi who is joined by Roel Velasco and Gerson Nietes.
“We could have had a better draw in the women’s category, but that’s how it is. None of our boxers lost badly, in fact some of our losses could have gone the other way. Still, we feel we are on track with our preparations for the SEA Games.”
The participation of ABAP here is supported by the Philippine Sports Commission and the MVP Sports Foundation.
The tournament drew 161 boxers from 19 countries and will end Saturday.

It’s final: boxers Barriga, Suarez out of SEAG
12:07 PM
boxing, SEAGames2015
Chief of mission Julian Camacho confirmed Tuesday that both boxers were excluded in the final roster submitted by the Association of Boxing Alliances of the Philippines.
Suarez, a silver medalist in the Incheon Asian Games, and 2012 London Olympian Barriga are under contract with the Aiba Pro Boxing tournament whose schedule is in conflict with the June 5 to 16 SEA Games playdate.
“It’s final, they’re not in the lineup,” said Camacho. “They are sure contenders for the gold, but there’s nothing we can do.”
Taking up the cudgels for the pugs are bantamweight Mario Fernandez, middleweight Wilfredo Lopez, lightweight Junel Cantancio, Eumir Felix Marcial, Rogen Ladon and Ian Clark Bautista.
Defending SEA Games champion Josie Gabuco heads the women’s cast that also includes Nesthy Petecio, Irish Magno and Riza Pasuit.
The Philippines captured three golds in the 2013 Burma (Myanmar) Games courtesy of Barriga, Fernandez and Gabuco while Lopez, Cantancio and Petecio settled for silver medals.
Abap allowed Barriga, a light fly, and the lightweight Suarez to trade mitts in the APB where two slots for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro for each weight category are at stake.

Hongitan starts preparation for SEA Games

archery, SEAGames2015
BAGUIO City archer Kareel Meer Hongitan shoots for the top plum as she joins the Philippine contingent set to challenge other neighboring countries in the upcoming 2015 Southeast Asian Games in Singapore this coming June.
Two months before the annual international sports race, Hongitan sets her sight to be among the Philippines' top shots in the event.
Archery coach and father John Hongitan said his daughter is already setting her goals this early.
"Kareel at present is optimistic in the upcoming SEA Games, so far she takes her training seriously after her first international outing last March," the older Hongitan said.
Last month, the 17-year-old archer also joined the Philippine contingent in the recently concluded Asian Grand Prix in Bangkok, Thailand.
"Unfortunately the Philippine team who competed in Thailand landed fourth sa team events pero according to the Philippine Archers National Network and Alliance Inc. (PANNA) it was not bad at all since there a lot of international teams who competed," John Hongitan said.
"Hopefully they can have a better finish in the SEA Games since in the ranking of all the Asian countries who participated in the recent tournament in Thailand, number two ang Philippines," he added.
Kareel Hongitan is currently ranked as the second best female marksmen all-over the country in the recently concluded PANNA World Archery Championship qualifiers held earlier in January.
Together with Hongitan, other members for the 2015 Philippine women's archery team (recurve) are 2012 London Olympian Rachelle Ann Cabral-dela Cruz, Youth Olympic Games participant and US Open gold medallist Bianca Gotuaco, Philippine National Games winner Crizabelle Merto.
The BS Tourism student from the University of Baguio is also preparing for the WAC set this July in Copenhagen, Denmark.

golf, SEAGames2015
CEBU’s junior golf standout Weiwei Gao has made the four-man golf team that will represent the country in the 28th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games on June 5 to 16 in Singapore.
The 15-year-old jungolf ace of Alta Vista Golf and Country Club (AVGCC) is the lone golfer from Cebu and the first from AVGCC to compete in the SEA Games.
Gao earned the slot after a superb performance in the 2015 SEA Games qualifiers held by the National Golf Association of the Philippines last March 7 to 8 at the Mt. Malarayat Golf and Country Club and on March 19 to 22 at the Eagle Ridge Golf & Country Club.
Gao finished the qualifying tournament at second, firing 599 over eight days for an average of 73. Gao totaled 438 on his six best rounds, four shots behind the champion Rupert Zaragoza III of Manila.
Gao and Zaragoza III will be joined by Luzon golfers Ancieto Mandanas and Dan Emilio Cruz.
Mandanas had 445 total on his best six rounds with an average of two-over-par 74.1, while Cruz fired 447 and had an average of 74.5 in the qualifying round.
AVGCC general manager Nimrod QuiƱones said that Gao has been in the club’s junior golf program since he was six years old.
“We are very proud of Weiwei (Gao) and his achievements. He is one proof that with a proper junior program, we can contribute players for international competitions and hopefully, be one of the future pros,” said QuiƱones.
He added that the parents of Gao have been very supportive and credited the tournaments they joined here and abroad as a factor in his improvement.
Gao played in the Philippine Junior Amateur Open Golf Championships set on April 14-17 at the Sherwood Hills Golf Club in Cavite.
He was scheduled to compete with some of the country’s top players in the amateur ranks like Zaragoza III, Justin Quiban, Aidric Chan, Kristoffer Arevalo, Dan Cruz, Jelbert Gamolo, Lanz Uy, and Ryan Monsalve.
According to QuinoƱes, the Philippines is one of the top countries in the golf competition in the SEA Games and has won gold medals in team and individual events several times.
