Gilas pool’s volleyball version on the horizon

Volleyball will soon have its version of basketball’s Gilas Pilipinas.
Peter Cayco, vice president of the sport’s governing body, Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas, Inc. (LVPI), said yesterday they would soon hold a tournament for players 19 years and younger to select members of the national training pool.

Cayco also said a sponsor is needed to help send the team to tournaments overseas.

The Gilas national team of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) banks on the support of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) and the group companies controlled by tycoon Manny V. Pangilinan in sending the national team to competitions abroad.

“Instead of playing for the clubs, they will suit up for the national team,” Cayco said during the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) forum held at Shakey’s Ermita.

He explained that the corporate sponsors would pay for the players’ monthly allowances and the team’s expenses.

Monthly allowances

The SBP maintains a Gilas cadet team whose players, the majority of whom comefrom the collegiate ranks, receive monthly allowances.

“The income of the players [in the volleyball pool] will not be that big, but at least they are playing for the country,” said Cayco.

LVPI president Joey Romasanta said the move to form a team modeled after the Gilas program was proposed after injuries plagued the squad that competed in the Singapore Southeast Asian Games last June.

“Based on our experience in the SEA Games, the quality of the players’ performances will suffer if they’re overexposed,” said Romasanta. “We must form a team dedicated to playing for the national team.”

Aside from participating in the Philippine Super Liga and Shakey’s V-League, top volleyball players also see action in beach volley tournaments, exposing young stars to injury and accelerated wear and tear.

Azkals sans Phil, Luke battle Yemen Nov. 12

The Philippine Azkals will miss skipper Phil Younghusband and young defender Luke Woodland as they aim to get their World Cup qualifying campaign back on track next week.

Picking up just a single point from their last three matches, the Azkals hope to stay in the hunt for a place in the third round when they battle Yemen at Rizal Memorial Stadium on Nov. 12.

Younghusband, the Azkals skipper, will serve a suspension for picking up yellow cards against Uzbekistan and Bahrain while Woodland has been granted permission to stay with his new club, Chester FC, for the international break.

A free agent since June, when his deal with Bolton ended, Woodland signed with the English fifth-tier club last week.

Sorely missed in games against North Korea and Bahrain, striker Javier Patiño returns to the PH side after helping Henan Jianye to a fifth-place finish in the Chinese Super League.

The Azkals returned to training at McKinley Hill Stadium yesterday with 11 players showing up. The foreign-based Azkals like Neil Etheridge, Jerry Lucena, Rob Gier, Roland Muller, Iain Ramsay, Stephan Schrock and Patiño will start arriving in Manila this week.

As it stands, the Azkals have a mountain to climb to make the third round, which also means automatic entry to the AFC Asian Cup in 2019.

With only seven points from five games, the Azkals need maximum points in their last three games. That will include a trip to Tashkent to play Uzbekistan next year and a clash with North Korea at home.

“We’re left with the almost impossible task of winning all of our last three matches,” said Azkals manager Dan Palami. “We’re still hopeful because we have a chance.”

Batang Gilas outsteadies erstwhile unbeaten China in Fiba Asia Under-16 Championship

BATANG Gilas wound up on top in a see-saw battle, toppling erstwhile unbeaten China, 78-72,  on Tuesday in the Fiba Asia Under-16 Championship at the Arena Britana in Jakarta, Indonesia
The young Filipinos accomplished what their elder counterparts couldn’t pull off, turning back the much taller Chinese squad in the continental competition and China's first loss ever in the Under-16 tourney in 31 games dating back to 2009.
Batang Gilas moves to 4-1, the same record as China after the win that comes exactly one month after Gilas Pilipinas lost to host China, 67-78, in the Fiba Asia final in Changsha.
Kris Harvey Pagsanjan and Jason Mari Lorenzo hit back-to-back triples to put the Philippinnes ahead 73-72 and Jonas Tibayan extended the lead with a jumper to help Batang Gilas hold on for the win.
It was a huge win for the Philippines, which suffered a loss to Korea on Monday, their first defeat in the tournament.
Gian Mamuyac again led the Philippines in scoring, the flashy 5-foot-11 guard coming up with 22 points against a Chinese squad with average height of 6-6.
Skipper Samjosef Belangel scored 11, while Pagsanjan and Credo finished with 10 points apiece.
The Philippines led 39-33 at the half but China just wouldn't go away. Five straight points by Haotian Bai, including a triple with 1:55 left put China ahead 72-67, but that proved to be their last basket.
The scores:
Batang Gilas 78 – Mamuyac 22, Belangel 11, Pagsanjan 10, Credo 10, De Liano 9, Tibayan 7, Gozum 4, Publico 3, Ildefonso 2, Flores 0, Escalona 0.
China 72 – Bai 21, Zhu 16, R. Wang 13, Zhao 9, Wu 9, Y. Wang 2, Xu 2, Huang 0, J. Wang 0, Han 0, Li 0.

Meanwhile, 6-year old Ayasofya Vittoria Aguirre, the youngest among figure skaters in-training in the Philippines, earned her first gold medal at the Level Alpha Technical Division during the 2015 Skate Manila held at the SM Ice Skating Rink in Megamall.

Fil-German stunner Lehnert captures 3rd ITF title

Philippine tennis’ poster girl pinned down another ITF title.

Katharina Lehnert, the German-born Filipina stunner captured her third ITF title in her young career after topping the $10,000 Sharm El Sheik in Egypt recently.

The 22-year-old defeated Russian Veronica Miroshnichenko, 6-4, 6-3, in the final for the title which was also her second this year after ruling another $10,000 tourney in Engis, Belgium last September.

Amid her growing popularity not only in the country but also in the Asian region, Lehnert said she’d rather concentrate on her career and play in bigger tournaments in the next few month.

Lehnert, who won two silver and one bronze medals for the Philippines in the Southeast Asian Games early this year, is climbing up the world ranking where she is now at 401st in singles from a high of 389th in 2013.

Singapore SEAG website once described her as “the next Maria Sharapova” because of her big forehand and good looks.

On the way to the title in Egypt, Lehnert dispatched another Russian Anna Morgina (6-3, 6-1) in the semifinals, Slovakian Lenka Surikova (6-4, 7-6 (7-4) in the quaterfinals, Russian Anastasia Golubeva (6-2, 6-1) in the second round and Italian Claudia Franze (6-0, 6-1) in the first round.

In winning her title in Belgium, Lehnert defeated Vivian Heisen of Germany (6-3, 2-6, 6-1).
Lehnert also made semis of the Sharm El Sheik Week 1 but lost to Great Britain’s promising youngster Freya Christie (6-3, 2-6, 6-2).

The daughter of a Filipina teacher Imelda from Rosario La Union also made the finals in Prague after leading the Philippines to an unprecedented run in the Fed Cup last April.
